Intensive Treatment Unit
(ITU) Program
In Haiti, more than 4 out of 10 people do not have access to basic health care
Half of children do not receive vaccines against common diseases. The Intensive Treatment Unit (ITU) program, established in 2020, aims to provide essential medical care and comprehensive support to Haitian children affected by HIV and/or severely malnourished. It therefore contributes to reducing child mortality by ensuring access to health services and strengthening the health of children before they return to their families.
In partnership with the Caris International Foundation, FEJ Canada supports this program by strengthening the resources and services available.
Medical care available 24 hours a day with accommodation for sick children
A comprehensive programme to preserve lives
Thanks to its multidisciplinary team of qualified and experienced medical staff, this program offers the following services:
- Access to essential HIV treatment
- Medical care available 24 hours a day with accommodation for sick children and a parent on site
- Nutritional support and specialized assistance for severely malnourished children
- Psychosocial and educational follow-up for children and their families
- Training and nutritional advice for mothers
Goals for the future
The ITU program plans to expand its intervention out of 5 urban areas in Haiti in order to reach 300 sick children each year. It will be implemented with actions targeting disadvantaged communities aimed at:
- Detecting and treating malnourished and HIV children according to WHO criteria
- Improving nutrition, hygiene and sanitation services
Educating families for a more effective prevention of childhood diseases.
Help support this project and give to these children a healthier outlook for the future.
